Statement on Meeting between the Chairperson of the Regional Peace Initiaitve on Burundi, HE President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the Facilitator of the Burundi Peace Process, HE Deputy President J Zuma, 12 October 2004

Deputy President Jacob Zuma, the Facilitator of the Burundi peace process, today met with President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, in the President's capacity as chairperson of the Great Lakes Regional Initiative on Burundi.

The two leaders reviewed the progress made in the Burundi peace process, since the last regional summit held on 18 August 2004. They welcomed the progress made by the Burundi parties since the last Summit.

The meeting received a comprehensive report and proposals from the Independent Electoral Commission of Burundi, tasked with preparing for the country's elections, aimed at ushering in democracy. The elections are supposed to take place by the end of October 2004, in terms of the Arusha Peace and Reconciliation Agreement.

In view of the report and proposals of the IEC, the two leaders resolved that President Museveni should consult with regional Heads of State with a view to convening an urgent regional summit to discuss the way forward.
