Deputy President Jacob Zuma Arrives
in Cape Verde, 10 August 2004
Deputy President Jacob Zuma arrived in Praia, Republic
of Cape Verde, this morning, on 10 August 2004, for
a two-day visit aimed at further strengthening relations
between the two countries.
The Deputy President's visit to Cape Verde followed
an invitation extended to him by Prime Minister Jose
Maria Neves during his Official Visit to South Africa
during July 2003.
The Deputy President's delegation includes:
- The Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr Mandisi
Mphahlwa
- Premier of the Free State Province, Ms Beatrice
Marshoff
- MEC for Tourism, Environmental and Economic Affairs,
Dr B Malakoane
- MEC for Sports, Arts, Science and Technology, Mr
MJ Mafereka
- Representatives from public enterprises such as
Airports Company South Africa, Eskom and South African
Airways.
The visit is aimed at identifying further areas of
political and economic co-operation between the two
countries, and in particular to explore ways in which
South African private and public enterprises can become
involved in mutually beneficial economic ventures with
their Caspe Verdean counterparts, within the context
of NEPAD.
The Free State Province seeks co-operation in areas
of agriculture, sports and environmental affairs with
the Cape Verde islands.
This morning, the Deputy President held wide-ranging
discussions with Prime Minister Neves and paid a courtesy
call on President Pedro Pires of the Republic of Cape
Verde. He also met the President of the National Assembly,
Mr Aristides Lima.
The South African business delegation held bilateral
meetings with Cape Verdean counterparts.
Tomorrow the Deputy President will have engagement
in the Cape Verdean Islands of St Vincent and Sal, and
then conclude his visit to the country. He will then
proceed to the Republic of Benin for a two-day official
visit.
