Update on South Africans in the Cayman Islands

The Department of Foreign Affairs wishes to advise the following regarding the status of South Africans in the Cayman Island:

According to information at our disposal, no South African citizens have been injured or killed;

South Africa does not have a diplomatic mission in the Cayman Islands;

South Africa is accordingly in close liaison with the British High Commission who have been most helpful;

The Department of Foreign Affairs continues to monitor the situation in the Cayman Islands, particularly that concerning our citizens.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has been advised that the airport in the Cayman Island will reopen tomorrow, Thursday 16 September 2004 for commercial flights.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has also been advised that emergency points have been set up throughout the Island to provide food and water rations.

The Department of Foreign Affairs remains in contact with families who have relatives on the Island. In this regard, families that have enquiries can call the Consular Section of the Department as follows:
