Condolences Offered to Chechnyan Government Following Assassination of President Kadyrov

President Mbeki today, Monday - 10 May 2004, extended his heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Chechnya following the assassination of President Akhmed Kadyrov in Grozny. President Mbeki said, "It is with much sadness and concern that we have learnt of the assassination of President Akhmed Kadyrov in Grozny, Chechnya, yesterday - Sunday, 9 May 2004."

"The South African government reiterates its unequivocal condemnation of acts of terrorism and the indiscriminate use of violence which results in the death of and injury to innocent civilians." "The South African government calls on all parties to commit to unconditional negotiations with a view to finding a political solution in the best interests of the people of Chechnya."

"To the Government, people, loved ones and friends of President Kadyrov, please accept the deepest condolences of the government and people of South Africa at this time of national mourning." "We wish those injured a speedy recovery," concluded President Mbeki.
