Statement on a Microlight Plane Crash in China

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been advised by South Africa's Ambassador to China, Themba Kubheka of a micro-light plane crash involving a South African male pilot in Hunan Province, today, Friday 28 May 2004.

According to the SA diplomatic mission in China, the micro-light pilot involved in the accident was one of two pilots from South Africa who are currently in China on a fund-raising mission for the Red Cross Hospital in Cape Town.

At this stage it is not clear what the cause of the accident was. The Chinese authorities are still in a process of accessing the area of the accident to ascertain the cause of the accident as well as to identify the body sighted on the site of the crash.

The South African diplomatic mission in China will remain in contact with the Chinese Aviation Authorities with a view to bringing the matter to a closure.
