Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Aziz Pahad to attend International Conference on the
Great Lakes Region, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Monday,
15 - Saturday, 20 November 2004
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad will
depart for Tanzania on Monday, 15 November 2004 where
he will attend the Ministerial Meeting ahead of the
First Summit of the International Conference on the
Great Lakes Region scheduled for Tuesday, 16 - Wednesday,
17 November 2004.
President Thabo Mbeki, in his capacity as a "Friend
of the Great Lakes region," will attend the Summit
scheduled for Friday, 19 - Saturday, 20 November 2004
on conclusion of his official visit to Belgium, Strasbourg
and the Netherlands.
Heads of State of the core countries dealing with the
situation in the Great Lakes Region, viz. Angola, Burundi,
the Central African Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic
of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and
Zambia are expected to attend the Summit.
In addition, representatives of the 39 countries and
international organisations which constitute the Friends
of the Great Lakes region will also attend the Summit.
Canada and The Netherlands co-chair the Friends of the
Great Lakes region forum.
The First Summit of the International Conference on
the Great Lakes Region is being held under the joint
auspices of the African Union (AU) and the United Nations
(UN) and is expected to deal with the following issues
with regard to the Region:
- Peace and security;
- Good governance and democracy;
- Economic development and regional integration; and
- Humanitarian and social issues.
