Senior South African Govermennt Officials' Delegation Meets with Equatorial Guinea Attorney General

A delegation of senior South African Government officials led by Billy Masetla, Presidential Security Advisor and former SA's Ambassador to Gabon, Ambassador Monaisa, met with Equatorial Guinea's Attorney-General Jose Olo Obono and Equatorial Guinea Ambassador to South Africa Juan Nchuchuma in Pretoria, South Africa on Wednesday - 27 October 2004.

Discussions centred around the situation of South Africans currently in detention in Malabo. The South African delegation requested further consular access to those currently in detention in Malabo, which was approved. Foreign Affairs Consular officers will be visiting the detainees as soon as the arrangements have been finalised.

In addition, the Attorney General advised the South African delegation that the trial of the South Africans will re-commence on 16 November 2004. In this regard, the South African delegation impressed upon the need for access to the trial by South African and other media. The Attorney General approved the request as well.

The South African delegation will continue to liase with the authorities in Equatorial Guinea to ensure the South Africans in detention receive treatment in line with international norms.
