Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Pays Official Visit to Eritrea, 3 August 2004

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, today - Tuesday, 3 August 2004 - paid a courtesy call on Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki in Asmara, Eritrea to deliver a message from President Thabo Mbeki

Earlier in the day, Minister Dlamini Zuma met with her counterpart, Foreign Minister Ali Said Abdella, for bilateral political and economic discussions.

During the meeting Minister Dlamini Zuma and her counterpart exchanged views on many regional and continental matters including, among others, the recent High Level Meeting attended by President Mbeki and Minister Dlamini Zuma in Accra, Ghana on the Ivory Coast; developments in the peace processes of the DRC, Burundi and Sudan; and areas of potential co-operation between both countries - construction and infrastructure development and agro-industry.

Views were exchanged regarding the current impasse in the Ethiopian-Eritrean border conflict during which time Minister Dlamini Zuma was briefed by her counterpart on the status thereof.

South Africa is expected to open its first Embassy in Asmara, Eritrea on 1 October 2004.
