Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs,
Aziz Pahad and Sue van der Merwe to meet German Minister
of State of Foreign Affairs, Kerstin Müller, Pretoria,

Pretoria - Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Aziz
Pahad and Sue van der Merwe will, on Monday - 18 October
2004 - hold bilateral political and economic discussions
with the German Minister of State of Foreign Affairs,
Kerstin Müller at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
Issues on the agenda will include, among others:
- The African Union (AU), Pan African Parliament (PAP),
NEPAD with regard to G8 commitments and progress on
implementation, and the African Peer Review Mechanism
(ARPM);
- Regional issues, namely conflict resolution in Southern
Africa, Sudan, Burundi, the Great Lakes region;
- Iraq, Iran and Middle East peace process; and
- Multilateralism and UN reform
Since 1994, the relationship between South Africa and
Germany has developed into a strong political, economic
and social partnership that has shown considerable growth
in many areas. Both countries regard the relationship
as of mutual importance, especially in view of the role
that they are, respectively, playing within the AU/SADC
and EU/G8. Germany and South Africa complement policies
within the multilateral context and this lends itself
to further developments.
Minister Müller is visiting South Africa to officially
open the German-South African Cultural Weeks, as Germany's
contribution to South Africa's 10th Anniversary Celebrations,
on Sunday, 17 October 2004.
Although the festivities have already started in September
the main events, which range from art exhibitions to
orchestral performances, workshops and conferences,
will take place during October and November 2004.
President Mbeki and Chancellor Schroeder have agreed,
during the Chancellor's visit to South Africa in January
2004 to be co-patrons of the Cultural Weeks. Minister
Mosibudi Mangena will be participating in the events
and will meet with Minister Müller on Sunday, 17
October 2004.
