President Thabo Mbeki congratulates President John Kufuor on his Re-Election

President Thabo Mbeki today, Friday - 10 December 2004 - extended his heartfelt congratulations to John Kufuor on his re-election as President following Ghana's fourth multiparty, democratic elections.

President Mbeki said, Your Excellency, "The Government and people of the Republic of South Africa warmly congratulate you as leader of the New Patriotic Party, on your re-election as the President of the Republic of Ghana."

"The electoral process in Ghana bears testimony to how important the respect for democracy and the institutions it creates is in ensuring peace and good governance in Africa. In this regard, our congratulations also go to the people of Ghana who have shown through their actions their appreciation for democracy."

"Bilateral political relations between South Africa and Ghana, one of the most stable multi-party democracies in the West African region are good, with both our countries maintaining residential Diplomatic Missions in each other's capitals."

"South Africa would like to acknowledge the close and warm relations with Ghana that have developed over the years and looks forward to continue working together in realising the economic development of the continent as envisioned by the NEPAD Initiative under the auspices of the African Union," concluded President Mbeki.
