Patriarch's Death: President Expresses Condolences

President Thabo Mbeki has noted with deep regret the untimely death in a helicopter crash in the Aegean of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria, Petros VII. Seventeen people died in the tragedy on Saturday, 11 September 2004.

The President said all South Africans would share in mourning the death of a beloved figure of such significance to Africa and South Africa. The Patriarch was closely associated with the continent's struggles to end poverty and underdevelopment, and would be remembered as a true friend of our democracy and freedom. He had very close ties with South Africa, having lived here previously, and showed admiration for our transition to democracy, and a firm grasp of relevant issues such as Nepad and African renewal.

The heavy loss of life was a cause of immense shock and sadness; and the President, on behalf of the people and Government of South Africa, extended his deepest condolences to families and loved ones.
