Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad to meet Greek Counterpart, Panayotis Skandalakis, Pretoria, South Africa, Monday, 11 October 2004

PRETORIA - South African Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad will hold bilateral political and economic discussions with his counterpart from the Hellenic Republic, Deputy Minister Panayotis Skandalakis, today, Monday - 11 October 2004, at the Union Building, Pretoria.

Deputy Minister Skandalakis is responsible for Hellenic Communities Abroad and deals with issues impacting on these communities such as bilateral affairs, education, and arts and culture.

The Hellenic community in South Africa currently numbers between fifty and sixty thousand. As such the Hellenic Government is committed to the Hellenic community in South Africa and actively encourages Hellenic nationals to play a positive and constructive role in South Africa.

Issues on the agenda of discussions will include:

  • Bilateral economic and political discussions;
  • The operationalisation of the African Union and NEPAD as the socio-economic programme of the Continent;
  • Attempts to create the conditions for peace, security and stability on the African continent - with particular reference to Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and Darfur, the Ivory Coast
  • Co-operation between South Africa and the Hellenic Republic in the fields of education, arts and culture;
  • The regional situation viz: Cyprus, the Balkans;
  • The global fight against terrorism; and
  • Reform of the United Nations.
