Statement on Adoption of United Nations
Security Council Resolution 1546 (2004) on Iraq on 8
June 2004
The South African Government welcomes the unanimous
adoption by the United Nations Security Council of resolution
1546 (2004) on 8 June 2004.
The South African Government is encouraged that consensus
has been reached on the questions of political transition
in post-war Iraq and the transfer of sovereignty to
the Iraqi people by 30 June 2004.
The South African Government is further encouraged
that sovereign control over Iraq's natural and financial
resources has been placed under the authority of the
new Interim Government of Iraq.
The South African Government also welcomes the work
of the United Nations in establishing an Independent
Electoral Commission (IEC) of Iraq, which will be tasked
with preparing for the holding of elections by January
2005.
The South African Government expresses deep appreciation
for the work done by UN Special Advisor Lakhdar Brahimi
in conducting wide-ranging consultations, in working
to forge consensus and a way forward as the Iraqi people
collectively determine their future. The South African
Government wishes further to commend Mr Brahimi for
fulfilling his mandate on Iraq on time.
The South African Government reiterates its position
that true legitimacy can only be conferred on the Iraqi
political transition through a full and credible transfer
of sovereignty and authority to the Iraqi people, which
will contribute to sustainable peace, stability and
security in Iraq.
