The Department of Foreign Affairs confirms the deaths of yet another two South Africans in Iraq who were killed on Tuesday 12 October 2004. This brings to 10 the official number of South Africans killed in Iraq since the start of the war. Our information indicates that the convoy in which the two were travelling came under fire in the South of Baghdad leaving the two South Africans dead. The mortal remains of the two have now been transferred to Kuwait.

In this regard, the Department of Foreign Affairs is in contact with their employer with a view to assisting them to secure export permits from Kuwait to South Africa. In addition the Department of Foreign Affairs is in a process of making contact with the bereaved families to render consular assistance.

The Government extends its heartfelt condolences to members of the bereaved families during these trying moments. Nonetheless, the Government reiterates its call on South Africans not to visit Iraq in the light of the ongoing conflict in that country.
