Statement Following Recent Violence in Gaza and Ashdod

The South African government expresses its dismay and outrage at the recent twin suicide bombings that left ten civilians dead in the southern Israeli port of Ashdod on Sunday, 14 March 2004. In the same vein, the South African government strongly condemns the recent incursions by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) into the occupied territories.

Violence and counter violence cannot be in the best interests of ordinary Israelis and Palestinians who yearn for peace. The South African government reiterates its view that there can never be a military solution to the political challenges facing Palestinians and Israelis.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad said, "Acts of violence and counter violence have reached alarming proportions and there is an urgent for both parties to meet in order to break the current impasse. This is the only way in which to stem an ever increasing spiral of violence".

"It is crucial that the planned meeting between Prime Ministers Sharon and Qurie continues as scheduled. Contact at this time, between the two leaders, is crucial. In this regard the acts of extremism must not be allowed to subvert the peace initiative in the Middle East," the Deputy Minister added.

The South African Government again reiterates the need for both parties to meet in order to discuss issues. Only once there is dialogue will both parties create the conditions necessary for peace. In this vein the South African Government calls on both parties to remain committed to the implementation of the Road Map.
