Media Statement Following remarks by Prime Minister Sharon that he has abandoned the Road Map

The South African Government has noted with concern the statement by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on 15 September 2004, in which the Prime Minister announces his intention to abandon all plans for the implementation of the Road Map.

The South African Government still believes that the Road Map provides the best mechanism to address the growing deterioration and hopelessness in the region. In this vein, the Government views the adoption of UNSC Resolution 1515 as a very important milestone on the way to the establishment of a viable and independent Palestinian state alongside the State of Israel.

Furthermore, the South African Government believes that any legitimate withdrawal from Gaza must take place within the framework of the Road Map.

The South African Government has consisently reiterated its support for the Road Map and its implementation, and herewith renews its call on the Israelis, Palestinians and the Quartet to recommit themselves to the full implementation of the Road Map.
