Statement on the Carmel Market Suicide
Bombing
The South African Government condemns in the strongest
possible terms the suicide bombing in Carmel Market
on 1 November 2004, which resulted in the deaths of
three Israeli civilians, injuring close to 30 bystanders.
The South African Government believes that the killing
of innocent civilians whether Israeli or Palestinian
only helps further delay any movement towards peace,
causing greater instability in an already volatile environment.
"In this regard, neither party to the conflict
should allow extremism and violence to derail any plans
that would bring the peace process forward", Deputy
Minister Pahad said.
The South African Government maintains that any withdrawal
from Gaza should take place within the framework of
the Road Map, as the Road Map remains the best mechanism
to address the growing deterioration and hopelessness
in the region.
