Minister Dlamini Zuma concludes Visit to Ethiopia ahead of Official Visit to Indonesia

Addis Ababa - South African Foreign Minister, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will today, Wednesday - 8 December 2004 - conclude her official visit to Ethiopia where she led a South African delegation to the Extraordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Executive Council of Foreign Ministers held from Monday - Tuesday, 6-7 December 2004.

The Executive Council discussed the Programme of Achievement and Budged of the African Union for 2005/6 as referred to it by the AU Summit of Heads of State and Government held in July in Ethiopia, for finalisation and recommendation to the next Summit of AU Heads of State and Government.

While in Ethiopia, Minister Dlamini Zuma held several political bilateral discussions with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin, AU Commission Chairperson Professor Alpha Konare and EU Commissioner for Development Louis Michel. She also received a briefing from the officials of the South African Public Works Department on progress regarding the building of a new South African Embassy in Addis Ababa.

In addition, Minister Dlamini Zuma together with her counterpart from Chad, Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Integration Nagoum Yamassoum, yesterday - Tuesday, 7 December 2004 - signed a General Co-operation Agreement between their respective governments.

Indonesia

Minister Dlamini Zuma will depart Ethiopia later today, Wednesday, 8 December for an official visit to Indonesia, from 9-11 December, as part of efforts by South Africa to expand the frontiers of trade, investment and tourism in the Middle East and Asia Region.

In this regard, Minister Dlamini Zuma is scheduled to hold political and economic bilateral discussions with her Indonesian counterpart, Minister Hassen Wirayuda. In addition, the Minister will also address South African envoys based in the Middle East.

Minister Dlamini Zuma's visit to Indonesia also comes in the wake of preparations for the forthcoming Asia-Africa Summit (marking the 50th Anniversary of the 1954 Bandung Conference) scheduled for 21-23 April 2005.

The Bandung Conference was held in 1954 to strengthen and consolidate African - Asian Solidarity against colonialism and apartheid. The late Walter Sisulu, Molvi Cachalia and Moses Kotane represented South Africa at the Conference.
