President Thabo Mbeki to Visit Mozambique,
Tuesday, 1st - Friday, 4th June 2004
President Thabo Mbeki departed SA today, Tuesday, 1
June 2004 for Mozambique where he will together with
President Joachim Chissano inaugurate the Natural Gas
Project in Vilankulos, Mozambique. President Mbeki's
delegation includes accompanied by the Ministers Phumzile
Mlambo-Ngcuka and Mandisi Mpahlwa.
The project is in line with international energy trends
and will bring significant socio-economic and environmental
long-term benefits to the region. This is the second
of several macro-projects between South Africa and Mozambique
that has commenced operations, the first being the Mozal
I and II Aluminium Smelter.
SASOL has invested US$ 1,2 billion to bring natural
gas from Mozambique to South Africa. The first batch
of gas was delivered to Secunda, South Africa at the
end of February 2004.
WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM
Following the Natural Gas Project programme, President
Mbeki will attend the 14th Africa Economic Summit organised
by the World Economic Forum (WEF) from Wednesday, 2nd
to Friday, 4th June 2004 in Maputo, Mozambique.
President Mbeki will participate in the sessions entitled:
"African Leadership for Tomorrow" and "United
We Stand: The Role of Organised Business in Development".
The South African delegation will also include Ministers
Alec Erwin, Trevor Manuel and Deputy Minister Aziz Pahad.
A number of SA business leaders have been invited to
attend. These include Nick Christodoulou, Chief Executive
Officer of Sanlam; Colin Coleman, Managing Director
of Goldman Sachs International; Klaus Doring, Chief
Executive Officer of Siemens Limited; Thulani S Gcabashe,
Chief Executive Officer of Eskom; Carl Grim, Chief Executive
Officer of Aveng Limited; Reuel Khoza, Chairman of Eskom;
Russel Loubser, Chief Executive Officer of JSE Securities
Exchange; Rick Menell, Deputy Chairman of African Rainbow
Minerals Ltd; Gugu Moloi, Chief Executive Officer of
Umgeni Water; Jay Naidoo, Chairman of the Board of the
Development Bank of South Africa; Professor Wiseman
Nkuhlu, Chairman of the NEPAD Steering Committee; and
Peter Staude, Chief Executive Officer of the Tongaat-Hulett
Group Ltd.
Other participants in the Africa Economic Summit include,
among others: President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique
and Prime Minister Theo-Ben Gurirab of Namibia.
The Africa Economic Summit presents a wonderful opportunity
for African political and business leaders to interact
with role-players from the developed world in order
to build relations for economic co-operation that would
lead to the realisation of NEPAD as the socio-economic
development plan of the African continent.
