President Mbeki Congratulates President Armando Guebuza on his Election as President of Mozambique

President Thabo Mbeki, today - Wednesday, 22 December 2004 - extended his heartfelt congratulations to Armando Guebuza on his election as President of Mozambique.

President Mbeki said, "Your Excellency, please accept my congratulations on your election as the President of the Republic of Mozambique. Surely, your election by the people the Mozambique through successful democratic elections indicates their confidence in you as their leader and their determination to make a meaningful contribution in the enhancement of democracy in Africa."

"The strong relations between South Africa and Mozambique find their expression through structured bilateral relations in the form of the South Africa/Mozambique Heads of State Economic Bilateral and the Joint Permanent Commission for Co-operation, which was signed by the Presidents of our countries. It is our greatest hope that the spirit of co-operation will continue and thrive within this framework."

"Mozambique has been and continues to be a strong supporter of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) and an active member of the African Union (AU) in the implementation of its program, NEPAD. Our two countries have over a very short time been able to play a critical role in ensuring that Africa remains on the developmental agenda within the multilateral institutions. Therefore, your election as the President of Mozambique bodes well for the furtherance of the objectives of these institutions."

"The peaceful conduct of elections in your country has clearly demonstrated the will of people of Mozambique and their determination in the implementation of the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Elections in the sub-region."

"May I take this opportunity on behalf of government and people of South Africa to also express our best wishes for Your Excellency's good health and prosperity of democracy in the Republic of Mozambique."
In the same vein, may I also pay tribute and extend congratulations to the outgoing President Chissano. His dedication and quest for development, peace and prosperity in Africa remain the highlight of his tenure as the President of Mozambique. His outstanding work as one of the founders of the AU as well as its Chairperson will always be viewed as one of the strongest building blocks of the continental body. His excellent and continuous work for peace, stability and development in the continent will surely find its expressing the successful establishment of his foundation for peace," concluded President Mbeki.
