President Mbeki congratulates newly elected Namibian President,
Hifikepunye Pohamba Pretoria - President Thabo Mbeki, today - 21 November
2004 - extended South Africa's congratulations to Hifikepunye Pohamba, on his
election as the new President of Namibia following democratic elections on 15
and 16 November 2004. At the same time, President Mbeki congratulated the people
of Namibia for the excellent way in which they conducted the elections. President
Mbeki said, "please accept, on behalf of the government and people of South
Africa, our congratulations on your election as the President of the Republic
of Namibia." "I am certain that your election will add impetus
to the further consolidation and implementation of the African agenda and NEPAD
as part of efforts of the African leadership to push back the frontiers of poverty
and under-development," continued President Mbeki. President Mbeki
expressed his conviction that, "the two countries will continue to strengthen
their bilateral political and economic relations whilst discharging their responsibilities
towards the African Union and Southern Africa Development Community (SADC)."
On behalf of the government and people of South Africa, "May I take
this opportunity to also convey my best wishes for Your Excellency's personal
good health, prosperity for the Republic of Namibia and a successful term of office,"
concluded President Mbeki. President Mbeki also extended his best wishes
to outgoing President Sam Nujoma and gave support to his commitment to continue
to help strengthen institutions of democracy in the continent of Africa during
