President Thabo Mbeki congratulates President Mamadu Tandja of Niger on his Re-Election

Pretoria - President Thabo Mbeki, today - Friday, 10 December 2004 - extended his heartfelt congratulations to President Mamadu Tandja, leader of the National Movement for a Developing Society (MNSD) on his re-election on 8 December 2004.

President Mbeki said, "The successful conduct of these elections demonstrates the determination of the Government of Niger and its people to consolidate democracy and good governance in the country. South Africa would like to reaffirm its support of the ongoing efforts in Niger towards promoting democracy, good governance and development of the country, thereby contributing to the overall development of Africa."

"Please accept, Your Excellency, my best wishes, on behalf of the government and people of South Africa, during your term of office," concluded President Mbeki.
