Statement on the Health of President Yasser Arafat

The South African Government joins the international community in expressing its deep concern regarding the deteriorating state of health of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, who is now reported to be in a coma at a French hospital.

President Thabo Mbeki had last week on learning of the state of health of President Arafat conveyed a message of support through Deputy Minister Aziz Pahad to President Arafat, the Palestinian National Authority and the peoples of Palestine.

The Government takes this opportunity to express its hope for a speedy recovery of President Arafat so he can lead the Palestinian peoples on a road to peace and stability. In this regard, we extend our support to the entire Palestinian leadership and peoples during these trying moments.
