President Mbeki Offers Condolences to Pope John Paul II

President Mbeki, today - Tuesday, 30 December 2003 - extended the condolences of the South African government and people to Pope John Paul II following the death of Monsignor Michael Courtney, the papal nuncio to Burundi on Monday, 29 December 2003.

"We join the international community in expressing our outrage and condemnation at the senseless murder of Monsignor Michael Courtney, the papal nuncio to Burundi on Monday, 29 December 2003," said President Mbeki.

"Please accept, Your Holiness, the sincere and heartfelt condolences of the government and people of South Africa to the government and people of the Holy See."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of Michael Courtney at this time of mourning," concluded President Mbeki.
