President Thabo Mbeki Departs for SADC
Summit in Mauritius Sunday, 15 August 2004
President Thabo Mbeki will, tomorrow - Sunday, 15 August
2004 -depart for Port Louis, Mauritius, ahead of the
SADC Summit scheduled for Monday, 16 to Tuesday, 17
August 2004.
The Ministerial delegation to the SADC Summit include
Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Health and Trade and Industry
- Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang
and Mandisi Mpahlwa respectively, and Deputy Ministers
of Foreign Affairs, Minerals and Energy and Social Development
- Aziz Pahad, Lulua Xingwana and Jean Benjamin respectively
Issues on the agenda of the Summit will include, among
others;
- A report on developments around the operationalisation
of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security. South
Africa will assume the Chairpersonship of the SADC
Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Co-operation.
- Review of the regional, political, economic and
social developments with special reference to agriculture,
food security, gender and HIV and AIDS.
- The final report of the Review Committee on the
Implementation of the Restructuring Exercise of SADC
Institutions.
- The status of the ratification and implementation
of SADC Protocols.
- The report of the Integrated Committee of Ministers.
- A report on gender equality.
- Progress in terms of the operationalisation of
the African Union including:
- The operationalisation of the Protocol Relating
to the establishment of the Peace and Security Council
(PSC) of the AU;
- The Draft Protocol to the AU Convention on the
Prevention and Combating of Terrorism;
- The launching and establishment of the Pan-African
Parliament;
- The Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC)
of the AU;
- The implementation of NEPAD and the outcomes of
the high level NEPAD Meeting of SADC members scheduled
for 12 August 2004;
- Summit will be briefed by South Africa on arrangements
for the hosting of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
