Statement following the Near Simultaneous
Explosions on Three Trains in Madrid on 11 March 2004
President Thabo Mbeki today, Thursday, 11 March 2004
conveyed the South African government's heartfelt condolences
to King Don Juan Carlos I, the government and people
of Spain following explosions on three commuter trains
in Madrid today.
"The South African government expresses its shock
and dismay at the horrific explosions on three commuter
trains today, Thursday, 11 March 2004, that resulted
in the deaths of more than one hundred and seventy passengers,
and injury to hundreds more," said President Mbeki.
"During this moment of great sorrow and bereavement
the thoughts and prayers of South Africans are with
the government and people of the Kingdom of Spain and
in particular with the families and friends of the victims
of these devastating blasts. Please accept Your Majesty,
on behalf of the government and people of South Africa
our sincere and heartfelt condolences during this difficult
moment," said President Thabo Mbeki.
The South African government reiterates its outrage
and condemnation of all forms of terrorism against innocent,
defenceless civilians.
