Deputy Minister Sue van der Merwe, to attend Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Co-operation 26 - 27 August 2004, Colombo, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka- SA Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Sue van der Merwe is expected to arrive in Colombo, Sri Lanka on Wednesday-Thursday ahead of the Council of Ministers of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Co-operation.

The meeting of the Council of Ministers will amongst other issues discuss:

  • international developments since the last meeting especially the fact that it is convened shortly before the United Nations General Assembly 59th session in New York
  • Preferential trade agreement in the IOR - ARC
  • Economic and technical co-operation
  • Trade and Investment Dialogue of IOR - ARC
  • Project on the Socio - Economic Factors in Productivity will be tabled for discussion
  • Project on Science and Technology Co-operation in the Indian Ocean Rim
  • Project on Corporate Governance Reform
  • Review of Funding Agreements and Restructuring Mechanisms

GENERAL BACKGROUND

The IOR - ARC was launched in Mauritius on the 6 - 7 March comprising Australia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Oman, Seychelles, Singapore,

South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
The Association seeks to build and expand understanding among member-states through a consensus-based approach. Co-operation within the framework of the India Ocean Rim is based on the respect for the principles of sovereign equality, territorial integrity, political independence, non-interference in internal affairs, peaceful co-existence and mutual benefit.
