Minister Dlamini Zuma Arrives in New York for the 59th Session of the United Nations General Assembly: 20-23rd September 2004

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma arrived in New York, United States of America on Sunday 19th September 2004, ahead of the working visit of President Thabo Mbeki, who will lead the South African delegation to the 59th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled from Monday to Wednesday 20-23rd September 2004. President Mbeki is expected to deliver his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday 23rd September 2004.

President Mbeki is accompanied by Mrs Zanele Mbeki, Ambassador Dumisani Kumalo, South African Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador George Nene, Deputy Director-General: Multilateral Affairs, Department of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Barabara Masekela, South African Ambassador to Washington, Titus Mafolo, Political Advisor to the President, Advocate Mojanku Gumbi, Legal Advisor to the President, Lerato Phalatse, Deputy Director-General: Office of the President, Murphy Morobe, Deputy Director-General: Office of the President and Ambassador Billy Modise, Chief of State Protocol.

During the visit to New York, the President is expected to attend a meeting of World Leaders on Action Against Hunger and Poverty, hosted by President Lula Da Silva of Brazil a meeting on the report of the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalisation hosted by Tanzania and Finland and a working luncheon of the Regional Support Group on the Great Lakes Region hosted by UN Secretary General Koffi Annan

A number of bilateral meetings have been requested with President Mbeki from:

  • Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of Saint Vincent & Grenadines
  • Prime Minister Göran Persson of Sweden
  • Dr Javier Solana Secretary General of the Council of the European Union
  • Prime Minister Paul Martin of Canada
  • President George Batlle of Uruguay
  • Prime Minister Pedro Santana Lopes of Portugal
  • President Tassos Papadopoulos of Cyprus; and
  • Prime Minister Ayad Allawi of Iraq

President Mbeki is further expected to attend a working dinner with the Citigroup, a meeting with the American Jewish Committee and a reception on the opening of Ten Years of Freedom Exhibition.
President Mbeki returns to South Africa on Thursday 24 September 2004.
