President Mbeki to Address United Nations
General Assembly, New York, United States of America

President Thabo Mbeki, who is leading the South African
government delegation, which includes Mrs Zanele Mbeki
and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Nkosazan Dlamini
Zuma, is scheduled to address the 59th session of the
United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 59) in New York.
President Mbeki is the fourth speaker after Boznia
and Herzgovina, Peru and Namibia.
In its participation at the UNGA 59, South Africa hopes
to:
1. Promote the reform of the United Nations Security
Council and the revitalisation of the UN system generally;
2. Contribute to the work of the Secretary General,
Kofi Annan's High Level Panel on Threats, Challenges
and Change;
3. Promote the African Union (AU) and NEPAD within the
UN context;
4. Advance active follow up to the Millennium Declaration
and the outcomes of major UN conferences;
5. Support the global campaign against terrorism and
weapons of mass destruction;
6. Support the Middle East Peace Process;
7. Advance South-South co-operation through active participation
in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), G-77 + China and
the Commonwealth
8.
Following his address to the General Assembly, President
Mbeki is expected to have bilateral discussions with
Prime Ministers Pedro Lopes of Portugal, Iyad Allawi
of Iraq, and Manmohan Singh of India and receive a courtesy
call from British Secretary of State, Jack Straw.
President Mbeki is also expected to attend a meeting
with the American Jewish Committee.
Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Nkosazana
Dlamini Zuma is expected to hold bilateral discussions
with her French counterpart, Minister Michel Barnier
and Foreign Minister of Singapore, George Yeo; attend
a working luncheon of the Regional Support Group on
the Great Lakes hosted by United Nations Secretary General,
Kofi Annan and includes Mozambique, Tanzania, Angola,
Gabon, Nigeria and South Africa; and attend the International
Committee in Support of the Transition of the DRC Ministerial
Meeting.
On Tuesday, 21 September, President Mbeki held bilateral
discussions with Prime Minister of Canada, Paul Martin,
and Presidents Jorge Batlle of Uruguay and Pedro Pires
of Cape Verde and held a meeting with big business organised
by the Citigroup, whilst Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma held bilateral discussions
with her Russian, Canadian, and Iranian counterparts.
President Mbeki's delegation includes, Presidential
Advisors Advocate Mojunku Gumbi and Titus Mafolo, Deputy
Directors-General Billy Modise, Murphy Morobe, George
Nene and Lerato Phalatse.
President Mbeki is scheduled to arrive in South Africa
on Thursday, 23 September 2004 ahead of Heritage Day
Celebrations.
