Alleged South African Arrested near Mexican Border, USA

Following a series of media queries regarding the arrest of an alleged South African woman near the Mexican border on 19 July 2004, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to put the following on record:

  1. The SA diplomatic mission in Washington has not yet had permission granted for consular access to the suspect.
  2. Consequently, no confirmation has been received regarding the nationality of the suspect.
  3. Our information indicates she was arrested at McAllen border town, near Texas in the USA
  4. Our diplomatic mission in Washington has indicated that she is being charged for the following:

4.1 illegal entry into the USA
4.2 making a material false statement to a Federal officer
4.3 altering a passport for purposes of residing in the USA

The SA Diplomatic mission will continue with its endeavours to seek permission from the USA authorities for access to the suspect, with a view to offering consular services once the nationality of the suspect has been confirmed as South African.
