President Thabo Mbeki has been bestowed with the Good Brother Award from Washington's "National Congress of Black Women" for his unfailing and unwavering commitment to gender equality and the emancipation of women in South Africa.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will, on behalf of President Mbeki, receive the award on Sunday, 12 September 2004 in Washington, United States of America. Minister Dlamini Zuma will also deliver a keynote address at the Awards Luncheon.

The National Congress of Black Women (NCBW), formerly The National Political Congress of Black Women, was founded on 2 August 1984 in Washington DC and is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary of striving for the political and economic empowerment of Black women.

The NCBW was founded when DeLores Tucker assembled a group of 35 American women leaders of diverse groups to mobilise for greater involvement in the political process.

NCBW is a non-partisan organisation and has, as its primary mission, the mandate to facilitate the political empowerment of African American women through the following activities:

  • Identify, elect and act as mentors to African American women;
  • Encourage African American women without regard to party affiliation, to engage in political activities, the first of which is registering to vote;
  • Other training to African American women in understanding and operating within the political process;
  • Encourage African women to seek office at all levels of government and encourage the appointment of African American women at all government levels;
  • Develop and advocate public policy positions at every level of government; and
  • Prepare African American females under 18 years of age to enter the political process.

While in Washington, Minister Dlamini Zuma will also have discussions with various policy makers before returning to South Africa on Wednesday, 15 September 2004 ahead of the official opening of the Pan African Parliament.
