Return of Mortal Remains of South Africa's
Ambassador to Vietnam
The senior Foreign Affairs officials delegation, led
by Ambassador George Nene, dispatched to Vietnam by
the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini
Zuma, is scheduled to return with the mortal remains
of South Africas late ambassador to Vietnam, Simon
Makana in the early hours of Thursday, 19 February 2004.
The Director-General of Foreign Affairs, Dr Ayanda Ntsaluba,
Deputy Directors-General Ndumiso Nshinga, Dr Anil Sooklal
and members of the family will receive the mortal remains
of the late Ambassador at Johannesburg International
Airport.
The body of Ambassdor Makana will then be immediately
transported to his home in Pilane, Mochudi Village,
Botswana where he will be received by South Africas
High Commissioner to Botswana, Eunice Komane. Ambassdor
Makanas wife and children are domiciled in Botswana.
A memorial service in his honour will be held at the
Methodist Church, corner of Andries and Visagie Streets,
Pretoria on Friday, 20th February 2004 from 12:00 noon
to 14:00.
The memorial service is expected to be attended by Ministers,
Deputy Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps accredited
to South Africa, South Africas Ambassadors and
High Commissioners accredited to various countries in
the Continent, senior government officials and members
of the ANC, SACP and MK Veterans Association.
A night vigil will be held at the home of the late Ambassador
in Botswana on Friday, 20 February 2004. The body will
lie in state from 05:30 to 06:30 on Saturday, 21 February
2004 for viewing by family, friends and colleagues before
the funeral service at his homestead in Pilane, Mochudi
Village, Botswana.
The Department of Foreign Affairs reiterates Minister
Dlamini Zumas message of support, "our thoughts
and prayers reach out to his beloved wife, Sennye Nteseng,
daughters Nomvuyo, Lulama and son Mothusi."
"On behalf of the government and people of South
Africa we extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences
to the family, friends and colleagues," said Minister
Dlamini Zuma.
