The South African Council for the Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction

Since 1994 the South African Government has adopted a strict policy of disarmament and non-proliferation with regard to weapons of mass destruction and the capabilities to produce these weapons.

There is an investigation ongoing with regard to contraventions of:

-The Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction Act, 1993 (Act No. 87 of 1993)

-The Nuclear Energy Act, 1999 (Act No. 46 of 1999)

Enquiries are being made into the activities of some companies and individuals, who may have been involved. In this connection an arrest ahs been effected today and there has been a recovery of items alleged to have been used in the contraventions.

In the context of these investigations, the South African authorities have co-operated with their counterparts in other countries as well as with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
