NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

FOR WRITTEN REPLY

QUESTION NO 11

PUBLISHED IN THE INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO 9 of 10 AUGUST 2004

MRS MM MAUNYE TO ASK THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS:

In light of recent developments in the Democratic Republic of Congo, what is the current status of the peace process in the DRC? N426E

REPLY:

The transitional government in DRC is still in place and we are working very hard with them and the AU and rest of the international community to assist them to take the necessary steps towards a democratic elections including census voter registration and integration of different armed groups into a national defense force, as well as the conclusion of drafting a constitution and a referendum amongst other things.

There are objective and subjective difficulties, but we do not think they are insurmountable.
