Use of Diplomatic or Economic Targeted Sanctions on Zimbabwe

QUESTION TIME: 08 SEPTEMBER 2004

MR WJ SEREMANE (DA) TO ASK THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS:

(1) Whether her department will consider using either diplomatic or economic targeted sanctions towards Zimbabwe if that country continues to defy regional, continental and international obligations to protect human rights; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details;

(2) Whether her department has acknowledged the request of the Archbishop of Bulawayo, Pius Ncube, for stronger South African intervention in Zimbabwe, including the use of targeted sanctions; if not, (a) why not and (b) how does her department interpret this request; if so, what action does the Government intend taking in this regard? N488E

We intend working with SADC as we are multilateralists and not unilateralists.
