MRS SM CAMERER (DA) TO ASK THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN
AFFAIRS:
(1) Whether in the past twelve months representatives
of the SA High Commission in Mauritius visited a certain
South African person who is being held in a Mauritian
prison; if not, why not; if so, what arrangements have
been made to ensure that the said person has legal representation;
(2) Whether a final court date has been determined;
if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?

REPLY:
(1) Yes, representatives from the South African High
Commission in Mauritius visited the person in question
on a number of occasions since her/his arrest on the
11 March 2003.
A list of registered lawyers in Mauritius was provided
to the family. The family has elected to utilise the
services of a private lawyer, who has been appointed.
(2) A final court date has not been determined. According
to the investigating officer, the trial date would only
be set once the Prosecution has finalised its investigation
and submitted its report to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
This is a matter to be determined by the Mauritian authorities.
