QUESTION NO 556

PUBLISHED IN INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO 20 OF 03 SEPTEMBER 2004

MR JPI BLANCHE (DA) TO ASK THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS:

(a) What are the total annual running costs of the embassy in Uganda, (b) what are the costs of the (i) ambassador's residence and (ii) housing of the other staff of this embassy and (c) how many officials are employed at this embassy? N804E

REPLY:

(a) The total budget of the Department of Foreign Affairs for the budget of the South African High Commission in Kampala, Uganda for the current financial year is US $950 000.

(b) The cost of :
(i) the High Commissioner's Residence is US $3880 per month;
(ii) housing of the other four Foreign Affairs transferred personnel is US $7560 per month.

(c) There are five DFA transferred officials, four transferred officials from sister departments and 16 locally recruited personnel - who are responsible for their own housing.

The rentals for both chanceries and residences are very high. In other countries it is much higher than this. This is why we have asked the Cabinet to support us to buy or build our own missions in the coming years because this will mean huge savings over time.
