NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

FOR ORAL REPLY

QUESTION NO 78

QUESTION TIME: 08 SEPTEMBER 2004

1. PARLIAMENTARY QUESTION - BY MR DHM GIBSON (DA)

Whether in the light of South Africa's Chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community's Organ on Politics, Defence and Security, her Department will take any steps to ensure that Zimbabwe complies with the adopted SADC charter on free and fair elections; if not, why not: if so, what steps will be taken in this regard by (a) the SADC and (b) South Africa?

REPLY:

South Africa was elected by Heads of States and Government to chair the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Co-operation for the next twelve months. President Mbeki's leadership of the Organ will be exercised within the framework of the Protocol on Politics, Defence and Security Co-operation and the Organ Troika. His leadership will not supersede the structures and the collective leadership of SADC.

END
