Formula to determine financial contributions to the funding of the AU

NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

FOR ORAL REPLY

QUESTION NO 79

QUESTION TIME: 08 SEPTEMBER 2004

MR WJ SEREMANE (DA) TO ASK THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS:

Whether South Africa, in conjunction with its fellow African Union members, has decided on the formula to determine financial contributions to the funding of the AU; if not, (a) why not and (b) what steps are being taken to finalise the formula; if so, what is the (I) formula and (ii) size of the financial contribution South Africa will make? N786E

REPLY:

The formula that was decided in Maputo needs revision because the AU budget is not adequate. There are ongoing discussions at the moment. The formula was based on the OAU but the financial needs of the AU are much greater because it has a much wider mandate with lots of institutions.
