Deputy President Jacob Zuma to Host Angolan Prime Minister Fernando

2005 Cape Town - South African Deputy President Jacob Zuma will host Angolan
Prime Minister Fernando de Piedade Dias Dos Santos in Cape Town from Tuesday -
Friday, 15-18 February 2005 for a high-level official visit to South Africa. This
follows the visit to Angola by Deputy President Jacob Zuma in August 2004. Prime
Minister Dos Santos will be accompanied by a high-level government delegation
consisting of Ministers of Defence, Transport, Energy and Water, Social Assistance
and Social Reintegration and Deputy Ministers of External Relations, Geology and
Mines and Petroleum. Ministers' Mandisi Mpahlwa, Pumzile Mlambo Nqcuka,
Mosiuoa Lekota, Zola Skweyiya and Deputy Minister Aziz Pahad will accompany Deputy
President Zuma to the meeting. Issues on the agenda of discussions between
Deputy President Zuma and Prime Minister Dos Santos, scheduled for Thursday 17
February will include, among others: · The expansion and consolidation
of strategic bilateral political and economic relations between both countries;
· Reconstruction programmes in Angola;
· Trade and Investment
issues;
· Regional and continental peacekeeping efforts;
·
Regional elections; and
· And Conflict prevention, management and resolution
in Africa. It is envisaged that agreements in the following areas will
be signed during the visit:
· Investment Protection and Promotion;
· Petroleum;
· Electricity;
· Defence Co-operation;
and
· Social Re-Integration. While in South Africa, Prime Minister
Dos Santos will pay a courtesy call on President Thabo Mbeki, hold discussions
with the Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete and of the Chairperson
of the National Council of Provinces, Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu. Prime Minister
Dos Santos will also have an opportunity to interact with South African captains
of Industry. Bilateral Economic Relations between Angola and South Africa
Angola
has a considerable natural resource base in the form extensive reserves of oil,
gas, diamonds and other minerals. It has the potential for significant exports
of coffee and other agricultural products. It also possesses fertile highlands
with a favourable climate and plenty of water. Various companies in South
Africa, including Eskom, Gauteng Economic Development Agency, Protea Hotels, and
ABSA have visited Angola recently to explore the possibilities of investing in
Angola. In addition, non-governmental organisations and churches are involved
in Angola to contribute towards rebuilding Angola after decades of protracted
civil war. These organisations as well as the government are providing humanitarian
