President Thabo Mbeki to Participate in the 3rd Summit of the
African Peer Review Forum (APRF), Abuja, Nigeria, Sunday, 19 June 2005 Tshwane
- South African President Thabo Mbeki will lead the South African delegation to
the 3rd Summit of the African Peer Review Forum (APRF) scheduled for Sunday, 19
June 2005 in Abuja, Nigeria. President Mbeki's participation in the Forum
comes within the context of South Africa's focus on the consolidation of the African
agenda through the strengthening of the institutions of the African Union. Coming
ahead of the African Union Summit scheduled for 4-5 July 2005, the APRF will consider
the Base Country Review Report on Ghana and Rwanda. These two reports constitute
the first to emerge from the African Peer Review Mechanism (APFM) process and
will provide useful lessons for country reviews to follow. Other issues
on the Agenda are expected to include: - A progress report of the NEPAD
Secretariat with particular reference to the implementation of Millennium Development
Goals and preparations for the G-8 Summit to be hosted by Britain in Gleneagles,
Scotland from 7-8 July 2005;
- APRM Eminent Person's Group chair progress
report; and
- The way forward in the APRM process.
Participants
in the Forum will include Heads of State and Government from countries who have
acceded to the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), viz: Algeria, Burkina Faso,
Cameroon, Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique,
Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda, Egypt, Benin, Malawi, Lesotho,
Tanzania, Angola and Sierra Leone. President Mbeki is expected to return
