Joint Communique of the First Session of the Joint Bilateral
Commission Between the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and the Republic of South Africa Pursuant
to Article 1 of the Agreement signed on 30th April 2004, to constitute a Joint
Bilateral Commission between the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Republic
of South Africa, the First Session of the Joint Bilateral Commission was held
in Freeport, Grand Bahamas, on 23rd and 24th September 2005. The South African
delegation was led by The Honourable Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Minister of Foreign
Affairs of South Africa and the Bahamian delegation was first led by The Honourable
Vincent Peet, Minister of Labour and Immigration (Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs)
and The Honourable Frederick A. Mitchell, Minister of Foreign Affairs and the
Public Service, upon his return from New York. Joining them was the Honourable
Alfred Sears, Minister of Education and Attorney General of The Bahamas. Prior
to the First Session, working meetings at experts level comprising the sectors
of Agriculture, Arts and Culture, Education Foreign Affairs and Health were conducted.
At the opening ceremony on the 24th of September 2005, the leaders of both delegations
pointed out the close links of friendship and solidarity that unite the governments
and peoples of the two countries. They further stressed the need for the practical
implementation of joint programmes in a wide variety of activities: - Agriculture
- Arts
and Culture
- Education
- Foreign Affairs
- Health
Both
countries recommitted themselves to involving the private sector in achieving
the objectives of the Joint Bilateral Commissions. Both parties further expressed
satisfaction with the friendly, cordial and opening atmosphere during the exchanges,
which is a reflection of the excellent, friendly relations existing between both
