Two Suspects Arrested in Brazil for Alleged Possession of Cocaine
are South Africans Sao-Paolo-The South African Consulate-General in Sao
Paolo, today, Tuesday 5 July 2005, confirmed that two of the three suspects arrested
by the Brazilian law enforcement agencies recently for allegations of possession
and dealing in cocaine were indeed South Africans. The confirmation follows
a visit to the prison on Friday 1 July by South African Consular officers stationed
in Sao Paolo to verify the nationality of the three suspects and to determine
whether there were any obligations arising from the Geneva Convention for the
South African Government. In this regard, fingerprints of the three suspects
were send to the Department of Home affairs in Pretoria, which determine the nationality
of the two suspects as South Africans. Investigations into the nationality of
the third suspect continue. Following the verification of the nationality
of the two suspects, the South African Consulate-General in Sao Paolo will from
henceforth provide them with consular assistance for the duration of their stay
