Minister Dlamini Zuma Departs for Brunei and Malaysia Tshwane
- South African Foreign Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will later today, Monday
20 June 2005 jet out of South Africa for South East Asia with her delegation on
a two nation visit to Brunei and Malaysia from Tuesday - Friday, 21-24 June 2005.
Minister Dlamini Zuma's visit takes place against the background of South
Africa's objective to: - Increase trade interaction with South East
Asian countries
- Increase Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into South Africa
- And leveraging tourism opportunities for South Africa
Building
on the outcomes of the recently held G77 + China Summit in Qatar, Minister Dlamini
Zuma's visit seeks to expand and consolidating south-south relations. In
Brunei, Minister Dlamini Zuma is scheduled to hold bilateral political and economic
discussions with her counterpart Foreign Minister Prince Mohamed Bolkiah on Wednesday,
22 June 2005 in Bandar Seri Begawa. During the visit, Minister Dlamini Zuma will
also pay a courtesy call on His Majesty Paduka Waddaulah. In Malaysia, Minister
Dlamini Zuma will co-chair and preside over the launch of South Africa-Malaysia
Joint Ministerial Committee aimed at regulating political and economic relations
between South Africa and Malaysia. Both South Africa and Malaysia are part
of the Non-Aligned Movement troika, which includes Cuba in their capacities as
former, current and incoming Chairpersons of the Movement respectively. Malaysia
and South Africa share strategic and historic relations borne out of the struggle
against apartheid.
The Joint Ministerial Committee has sub-committees focusing
Foreign Affairs, Public Service and Administration, Communications, Science and
Technology, Trade and Industry, Transport, Education, Home Affairs, Defence and
Telkom. While in Malaysia, Minister Dlamini Zuma will pay a courtesy call
on the Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, interact with the South African
and Malaysian business community as well as officiating at the opening ceremony
