Deputy President Jacob Zuma arrives in Burundi

Deputy President, Jacob Zuma, has arrived in Bujumbura, Burundi, for a two-day visit aimed at assessing progress made towards elections and democracy in Burundi.

He is scheduled to meet with President Domitien Ndayizeye, Vice President Frederic Ngenzebuhoro, leaders of the 34 political parties, the Burundian Independent Electoral Commission and representatives of civil society groupings.

Talks are to centre around preparations for the referendum on the new constitution and removal of obstacles towards the democratic elections in line with the Arusha peace and reconciliation agreement.

The Deputy President returns to South Africa tomorrow, 26 January 2005.
