President Thabo Mbeki to Lead SA Delegation to the Commonwealth Meeting, Valetta, Malta

Tshwane - South African President Thabo Mbeki will depart South Africa on Thursday, 24 November 2005 for Valetta, Malta where he will lead the South African Government delegation including Deputy Minister Aziz Pahad to the Commonwealth Heads of State and Government Summit (CHOGM) scheduled for Friday - Sunday, 25-27 November 2005.

CHOGM 2005 is being held under the banner of "Networking the Commonwealth for Development." Deputy Minister Pahad is currently leading the SA delegation to the two-day Commonwealth Ministerial segment scheduled for today-Wednesday-Thursday 23-24 November 2005.

The South African delegation will participate in CHOGM 2005 with the primary objective of promoting the need for the achievement of the Millennium Developments Goals (MDGs) and the African Agenda with a view to pushing back the frontiers of poverty and under-development.

In this regard, the CHOGM provides an excellent opportunity for member-states to interact on these international issues of mutual concern in that it brings together micro-states to members of the G8, the poorest, the richest and the most populous, straddling the North-South divide.
