President Thabo Mbeki to Co-chair Comoros Round Table Donors'
Conference, Mauritius, 8 December 2005 Tshwane - South African President
Thabo Mbeki, accompanied by Deputy Finance Minister, Jabu Moleketi will visit
Mauritius on Thursday 8 December 2005 where he will together with the Mauritian
Prime Minister Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam co-chair the Round Table Donors' Conference
on Comoros. President Mbeki's is the Coordinator of the Countries of the
Region in collaboration with the African Union on the Comoros. The Conference
will be held within the context of the African Union's Executive Council decision
of July 2004 calling on the African Union (AU) Commission, South Africa and Mauritius
to provide all necessary support to convene the Donors' Conference to mobilise
the financial resources necessary for the socio-economic recovery of the Comoros.
In this regard, the government of the Comoros has identified seven strategic
objectives under its Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS), viz.: - Public
Finance Reform;
- Economic infrastructure development;
- Relaunch
of the energy sector;
- Communications infrastructure development;
- Strengthening
governance and justice;
- Improving the health of the population;
- Human
capital enhancement through education and vocational training;
- Sound
environment promotion and management; and
- Security and combating of terrorism.
The Round Table Donor's Conference on the Comoros will also be attended
by Comorian President Colonel Assoumani Azali, the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General
for Political Affairs, Ambassador Said Djinnit, AU Commissioner for Peace and
Security, Commissioner Louis Michel of the European Union Commission and Director
of the Arab League Ambassador Hosni. Other donor partners are also expected to
