President Thabo Mbeki congratulates Dr Mohamed ElBaradei on having won 2005 Nobel Peace Prize

Tshwane - South African President Thabo Mbeki conveyed his heartfelt congratulations today, Friday 7 October 2005, to Dr Mohamed ElBaradei and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), for having been awarded the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize.

President Mbeki stated, "Dr ElBaradei, please accept the sincere congratulations of the South African Government for being awarded the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize.

"The award is a personal tribute to your integrity and professionalism as head of the Agency and a well deserved recognition of the impartial and authoritative role of the IAEA.

"The Government of South Africa is proud that this award has been conferred upon such an eminent African international civil servant. We also commend the IAEA for its role as an important multilateral body performing valuable verification and other tasks that are central to the critical objectives of nuclear non-proliferation and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in the context of the need to eliminate all nuclear weapons."
