South African Government Statement on the Violation of the United
Nations Confidence Zone in Côte D'Ivoire Pretoria - The South African
government joins the international community in expressing its outrage and condemnation
of the recent violation of the UN Confidence Zone in Côte d'Ivoire by some
armed groups that crossed the zone from the South to the North last week. It
is our conviction that this incident only serves to undermine efforts aimed at
assisting the people of Côte d'Ivoire in their endevour to bring about peace
and stability under the aegis of the African Union (AU). In this regard,
the South African government has been in close liaison with the United Nations
regarding these developments. Accordingly, the South African government supports
the call by the United Nations for a thorough going investigation into the incident. The
South African government expresses its confidence that the majority of the people
of Côte d'Ivoire continue to support the peace process as initiated by the
AU and will not be used in efforts aimed at undermining this noble effort. Issued
