President Thabo Mbeki to Travel to Côte D'Ivoire

Tshwane - South African President Thabo Mbeki, together with Nigerian President Olusegan Obasanjo will undertake a working visit to Côte d'Ivoire on Tuesday, 22 November 2005.

President Thabo Mbeki is the African Union mediator of the Côte d'Ivoirian peace process whilst President Obasanjo is the Chairman of the African Union.

The visit to Côte d'Ivoire by Presidents Mbeki and Obasanjo comes within the context of the mandate given to both Presidents at the African Union's (AU's) Peace and Security Council meeting in Addis Ababa on 5 October 2005 to continue to assist the people of Côte d'Ivoire find a comprehensive and lasting solution to their current challenges.

In addition, Presidents Mbeki and Obasanjo will assist in the process of appointing a new Prime Minister as agreed at the 5 October meeting.

President Thabo Mbeki will return to South Africa on Wednesday, 23 November 2005.
